Sorrento

We said goodbye to Assisi and set off on our long trek to Sorrento, south of Rome. We left at 7:30 and drove almost 5 hours in a horrendous downpour.  At times cars were pulled over and we even had some hail.  All the while we were sick with anticipation about this being the day that we go to Pompeii.  When we got to Naples we drove part way up Mt Vesuvius to our restaurant for lunch. It was a very cool drive with lots of switchbacks and amazing views.  When we came out from lunch it had quit raining.  Laura was able to call our guide and he arrived at Pompeii an hour earlier than we had him booked so we could take advantage of the break in the rain.  He was a fabulous guide and we had a fantastic two hour tour of Pompeii.  I think Everyone actually listened the whole time!!
Pompeii is one of the most amazing archaeological sites in the world,  in 79 AD Mt. Vesuvius erupted and buried the ancient city under 4 to 6 metres of ash.  It was rediscovered in the mid 1700’s. The city had remained well preserved due to the lack of air and moisture. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy.  In two hours we only saw a fraction of the ruins.  The site is immense, definitely a place to return to.
Just as we were walking back to the bus, it started to rain again! !!  We couldn’t have been luckier!

It took us about an hour to get to our hotel in Sorrento.  We had to get off the bus and walk about 8 minutes to the hotel while small vans brought our luggage.  We are in a beautiful hotel that overlooks the sea and Mt Vesuvius.

We walked to a nearby restaurant for our included dinner and, once again, it was a lovely meal. Today is Deb’s birthday so we had birthday cake for dessert.  It was a beautiful evening so many of us did a stroll through the old part of town on our way back to the hotel.

The big wild card is about tomorrow. We are due to go over to the Isle of Capri but we won’t know until the last minute whether or not the boats are running!  I am not looking forward to going over on rough seas! 🤢. I guess we will see what tomorrow brings!!!

Ciao for now!
